AOC Listrac-Médoc
After belonging to the Bénillan family since 1820, the estate was taken over by Jacques de Pourquery in 1963 when his wife inherited it. He prided himself in using traditional methods of “vine-care”, respecting the natural patterns of nature.
Since 2002, Jean Chanfreau, owner of Château Fonréaud, has continued in his footsteps, always aiming to express the unique character of this deep Pyrenees gravel terroir.
The name Clos de Demoiselles stems simply from the hamlet where, in the old days, the “demoiselles” or young ladies of the village met
Terroir
All in one plot, this vineyard is planted on the South side of the Puy des Menjon, a slope of fine gravel on a limestone subsoil containing fossils. The exceptionally good sun exposure favours an early ripeness in the grapes.
Vine-growing
The principals of integrated agriculture are respected; great care is taken in cultivating the vines, grass is maintained between the rows and the grapes are handpicked.
Vinification & élevage du vin
Le Clos des Demoiselles is vinified with equal care :
- Picking the Merlots at perfect maturity to preserve the aromas and “fresh fruit” flavours, and the Cabernets “over-ripe” ,complementing them to perfection
- Fermentation in small vats at moderate temperature, and early transfer to barrels (40% new) for an ageing of 14 months
- Bottled just before the summer, after a light filtration, it will conserve the virtues of its youth for some time to come.
