Cru Bourgeois Supérieur
AOC Listrac-Médoc
The name Fonréaud, previously “Font-réaux”, means Royal Fountain. Legend has it sometime during the 11th century, an English king stopped off here, having found a source to quench his thirst. The château was built in 1855 by Henri Le Blanc de Mauvezin, according to the plans of the architect Garros. In 1962, Fonréaud was purchased by Léo Chanfreau. Today, Jean and Marie-Hélène Chanfreau, as well as Caroline Chanfreau-Philippon are continuing his work
Geographic Location
Situated in the district of Listrac-Médoc, the vineyard occupies a privileged position on the hills of Puy de Menjon, the highest point in Médoc. The average age of the vines is 30 years old and the growing is traditional
Terroir
The terroir of gravelly Pyrenean soil covering a well-exposed limestone subsoil allows the grapes to ripen early
Vinegrowing
Vinegrowing constantly ensures that a balance is maintained between the plant and its environment in view of achieving well-aired foliage and a regular load of grapes which gradually ripen in the sunshine. Depending upon their nature, the parcels are either ploughed or grassed over between their rows..
Vinification
A strict selection of the parcels and the grapes takes place during the harvest.
After the gentle crushing and destemming of the grapes, the must is put into small themoregulated vats ensuring that the fermentations are perfectly controlled, and thereby bringing out the expression, the richness and the nuances of each parcel.
The vatting period lasts 20 to 25 days depending upon the vintage
Ageing of the wines
Maturing lasts around 12 months in merrian oak barrels, a 1/3 of which is replaced each year under the cellarmaster’s direction.
We then undertake definitive blending before bottling at the chateau.
